Mixtape Roundup - November/December

Author: D.Bail

It's been ten years since the release of the mixtape classic 50 Cent is the Future, a year that established the full potential of what the mixtape represented to an artist career. A necessity to promote when a label can't or won't, a chance to capture the streets ear, create a movement, a following and a relevancy in a crowded mix of rappers all trying to achieve the same goal. 50 Cent brilliantly used the mixtape circuit to garner one the biggest deals at the time with Shady/Aftermath and the rest is history. This mixtape feature of the month, The Big 10 is a throwback to the hunger exhibited a decade before with 50 unleasing a arsenal of flows over soulful and hardcore beats plus dope features from Tony Yayo and new G-Unit signee Kidd Kidd. A successful career off the passion and talent of music is a beautiful thing, especially when coming with a relentless drive and humble beginnings. This business is a sacrifice with no guaranteed payoffs. Justo Faison created this platform, The Justos Mixtape Awards to salute those who were trendsetters and move makers in our culture. Where the Grammy's would not and what mainstream often shunned was met here with the full respect and admiration deserved and earned.

The voice of the streets who often certify and launch our favorite emcees, deejays and producers into success, finally had a say on what we loved and didn't. The music to our life, the soundtracks for the day, the mixtape is what we listened to, related to, embraced and shared. It was raw, uncut without any diluting or clean up. It evoked emotions for whatever situation you were going through and was an inspiration to go harder. Ten years later its stronger than its ever been. It has resurrected careers and brought new talent to the forefront. For some it is the key that opens the door for label deals, tours and respected acceptance worldwide. The Big Ten mixtape is an representation of the roots that sparked a million dollar entity. The deejays are still the holders and molders of what the streets want. DJ Whoo Kid and his role in the 50 Cent/G-Unit empire is also what makes this story so important. The alliances formed between a deejay and a artist is now more crucial than ever to move the culture further. Even though the way the music gets to the fans has changed, the essence of breaking the music hasn't changed. Supply and demand.

Finally the mixtape has been accepted into the mainstream valve of music culture through blogs, magazines, social networking, radio and television. I think Justo would be more than proud. To everyone that has supported The Justos Mixtape Awards, we definitely thank you and appreciate it. 2011 has been a groundbreaking year in the Mixtape/Street Album genre and it most certainly will continue. We look forward to serving the Hip Hop community and staying ahead of the curve in 2012. #JustoLivesOn

Mixtape DJ Roundup - September 2011

Author: D.Bail

Nas - Top 5 Dead or Alive? Or simply the best? Whatever your opinion may be, the fact is Nasir Jones has solidified himself as one of Rap music upper echelon emcees who has persevered strong through the past few decades. He has created classic albums to his name that are forever etched in Hip Hop history. This months Mixtape Roundup comes from DJ Rhude who has done a superb job in bringing some of Esco's lost gems to life with The Found Tape.
There is dope material on this release without a doubt. A Dame Grease produced cut 'Your Mouth Got You In It' tells the vivid story of friends that have crossed the line.
"2 of these dudes got in some murder sh*t just last year/I stopped f*cking with them they could make me lose my career/We still in touch though its just dough I make em some songs/the stench of death on they dirty money just feel wrong/But I don't knock it cause we came from the same upbringing/I came up slingin' the same way they came up slingin/One thing I learned though still judge n*ggas by it/Says alot about men who pretend but can't be quiet/ - Nas 'Your Mouth Got You In It'

Nas has always been one of the better story tellers in Hip Hop and his narration on the mic makes the listener feel like he's right there in the midst of it all. It is refreshing to hear articulate rhymes on a variety of beats. 'The Foulness' freestyle which was once only available on a classic DJ Clue tape is included here as well. The only rap features come from long long time collaborator AZ and Hip Hop legend Kool G Rap on 'The Essence (RMX)' & 'Streets Disciple (RMX)' respectively. Once gain this tape brings you back to the days where an emcee could hold his own with a limit on features. There are many gems to be found on this release and although most hardcore Nas fans may have heard a few joints featured on this tape, there are definitely some unreleased bangers here.

DJ Rhude has put together an excellent tracklist all in CD quality. Some of these tracks may be at least a decade old but the replay value is amazing. Nas is candid about his life and the ups and downs that have come with it on songs like 'My Worst Enemy' & 'The Rise & Fall'. He has always been the type of emcee that a listener has to hear more than once to catch all the jewels being dropped. With a new Nas album on the way possibly this year, this mixtape will no doubt bring an anticipation for the Streets Disciple to make his long awaited return. Hip Hop is alive and kicking!

Mixtape Artist Roundup - September 2011

Author: D.Bail

Young Jeezy has made a career in feeding the streets with mixtape classics with DJ Drama for a while now. Streetz is Watching, Trap or Die, Can't Ban The Snowman & I am the Street Dream fueled Jeezy's career and once again proved the power of mixtapes as the strongest promotional tool an artist or DJ has to make their way to the top. With this latest offering The Real Is Back 2, Jeezy picks up where he left on the first installment and puts together this months Mixtape Recap Feature. With hard hitting production from Lil Lody that fits Jeezy like a glove, the motivation to get money and more of it by any means necessary is more or less the theme here. Bass heavy trunk rattlers like 'Trump' featuring Cash Money C.E.O. Birdman, & 'Chickens No Flour' go hard in the paint as Snowman is back to reclaim his spot as The King of the Trap:
"I gotta Pocket Full Of Stones like I'm Bun B/I gotta pocket full of phones like I'm Pimp C/What you know Sno ghetto boy like Willie D/I parked that lamb in the ghetto boy silly me/I got my bags packed yeah I'm thinking road trip/Mr. Ice Cream Man that rocky road trip/I'm bout that Ghetty Green yeah I'm bumpin Project Pat/I make it back with these blocks I'll bring the projects back"/ - Young Jeezy 'Chickens No Flour'

Rhymes like these resonate with those in the street that are familiar with similar situations. Jeezy has been one that has been recognized as an authentic author of hustling and paints these pictures with an honesty that one would have had to actually experience to know the lifestyle. He has had a platinum plated career doing this and although rap in general has been catching alot of heat for their vivid portrayals in the music, "Trap Rap" remains one of the more popular subdivisions within the big melting pot of the culture. DJ Drama and Jeezy have a historic run on the mixtape circuit and don't disappoint on The Real Is Back 2. Shorter than the first offering, this mixtape also includes features from the newest CTE signee Freddie Gibbs. The two compliment each other well on tracks and the songs 'Rough' & 'Gotta See This' show a promising new energy and anticipation for more collaborations in the future. Other features include Slick Pulla, 211 and Yo Gotti. Jeezy has taken it back with signature ad-libs, cool as a fan flow and some speaker popping tracks.

As the world patiently awaits the release of Jeezy's 3rd album Thug Motivation 103 this is certainly a nice feast for fans to feed off until then.

Other notable releases include: (No Particular Order)

J-Hood - The 2nd Komin
J-Hood represents his ODG movement to the fullest, and is no stranger to the mixtape circuit. He has been relentless on his grind and this is one of his best drops in a long time. A nice mix of freestyles over current beats and a few original joints are all here. The hunger and talent still remain, and there is certainly a reason J-Hood was picked by mixtape legends to become the "fourth LOX member" As a pioneering artist formally from D-Block, Hood has shown much growth and proves he can hold his own.
Reppin': Yonkers, NY Standout Song: More Pain
HOSTED BY J-BOOGIE

Chevy Woods - The Cookout
He's officially the next to shine out the Taylor Gang and Chevy Woods doesn't disappoint with this smooth offering for the streets. An actual cookout theme is here which is cool. A nice diverse mix from laid back smoking anthems, feel good ride out joints and a overall theme of celebration. Wiz Khalifa appears on at least half the songs but it doesn't distract the listener from getting to know Chevy. Although the summer has ended, its always a good time to eat and The Cookout supplies all a listener may need. Bring the napkins and forks. Oh yeah and BYOB.
Reppin': Pittsburgh, PA Standout Song: Invitation
HOSTED BY THE TAYLOR GANG

Bow Wow - I'm Better Than You
Bow Wow is prepared to drop his Cash Money/Young Money debut by the years end, so in the meanwhile he hits the streets with his latest joint I'm Better Than You. There is some dope material on this mixtape and Bow Wow drops some bars with insight on tracks like 'Heaven' '& 'What My Future Holds'. Bow is displaying a little bit more of who is he is, which isn't a bad thing. He really spits aggressive on these tracks and has been perfecting his new sound on the mixtape circuit for the past year with his Greenlight series.
Reppin': Colombus, Ohio Standout Song: Heaven

Tony Yayo - Gun Powder Guru 4
In this 4th installment of GPG the Queens connect continue with DJ Superstar Jay and G-Unit's own Tony Yayo. Yayo has always kept a strong presence on the mixtape scene and Superstar Jay is one of the best doing it right now. With a album on the way in 2012, Yayo continues delivering those hood anthems he's know for. Gritty production and guest appearances from Prodigy and Byrdgang's own Mel Matrix, Yayo has put together a dope series with the Gun Powder Guru collection.
Reppin: Queens, NY Standout Song: Rollercoaster
HOSTED BY DJ SUPERSTAR JAY

Cyssero - C4 Project
Straight outta Philly PA, Cyssero links up with Cali's own DJ Far to bring a dope project to light and definitely gives Cyssero the shine he deserves. Formally affiliated with L.A. artist Game and his Blackwall Street label, Cys stands on his own two and has dope production and bars to go along with it, snapping on track after track. Punchlines and strong lyrics aside Philly has been a hotbed of spitters for a minute now and Cyssero does an impressive job of standing out amongst other talented Philadelphia emcees.
Reppin': Philadelphia, PA Standout Song: Come On
HOSTED BY DJ FAR

Benzino - Caezar
Boston's own Benzino is back with some heat. Known for his former co-ownership of The Source Magazine, and now most currently Hip Hop Weekly magazine, he his also a vet musically in the business. He has seen success with his groups Almighty RSO, Made Men and as a solo artist. This mixtape marks his return and doesn't hold any punches. Hard hitting production from the likes of Stevie J and some dope features from Waka Flocka, Ray J, B.G, and Lloyd. It seems as if Benzino is on the right path and hasn't lost a step with Caezar.
Reppin': Boston Massachusetts Standout Song: I'm Shining Now

Glasses Malone - The Dope Mixtape
West Coast Representative Glasses Malone has been on the grind for a minute now. With his new album Beach Cruiser hitting the streets after a long wait, he follows up with more on The Dope Mixtape hosted by DJ Whoo Kid. The mixtape opens up with a jacking for beats theme with '211' that is tough. Each track is named aptly after a drug and with titles like 'Cocaine' , 'PCP' and 'Miss Ritalin' he keeps the theme in order. Each track is short in length, but keeps up a great continuous non stop ride. G. Malone is one of the best out the West and with his Cash Money Records co-sign and independent hustle going strong, he continues to collect accolades with his mic prowess.
Reppin': L.A., California Standout Song: 211
HOSTED BY DJ WHOO KID

Piles - Arisotle
Plies is back with another banger in time for the Fall. Arisotle, hosted by Bigga Rankin adds another hit for to Plies mixtape catalog. Capturing the spirit of the hard times going on in our country today with joints like 'Pressure' is what the people appreciate about Plies. He definitely has some club heaters as well with songs like 'Lowa' but brings it right back to the hood with 'Dope Boys Dream'. Plies never lets his absence be felt for too long, and in this business keeping it consistent with music is one of the most important aspects of staying relevant.
Reppin': Fort Myers, FL Standout Song: Pressure
HOSTED BY BIGGA RANKIN

Charles Hamilton - C.A.T.S. Scan
With his comeback in full gear, Charles Hamilton is letting his listeners know, he's here for good with this new mixtape. The talented emcee and producer who has an all original, uncanny way of spitting doesn't go light on C.A.T.S. Scan. On the song 'Cats Said Scan I Can Diss You' he goes off on some of today's most popular emcees no holds barred. Other tracks show his diverse flow and ability to switch it up at a moments notice. He's a witty rapper for sure and is getting back to what made him see success in the first place - Mixtapes.
Reppin': Harlem, NY Standout Song: Jeff Distin Meetings

Mixtape DJ Roundup - August 2011

Author: D.Bail

Harlem World is back at it once more and some of the best from Uptown are in attendance. Harlem Heist 3 is this months DJ Mixtape Roundup feature. When three of the most popular DJ's get together its always a good look and DJ Hood, DJ Grady & DJ Diggz put together an ill assortment of some of Harlem's finest tracks released this summer. When you think of Harlem, the long line of emcees who smashed the mixtape circuit are endless. Ma$e, Big L (RIP) McGruff and Max B come to mind. Then you have the newer class of underground artists like Charlie Hamiliton, Charlie Clips, Tom Gist, Alpac and ASAP Rocky. Cam'Ron ushered in the trend setting Dip Set era with Jim Jones, Freeky Zeeky and Juelz Santana. Vado has being seeing success and earlier this year signed a solo deal with Interscope Records, and the Diplomats are back together after a brief split working on brand new material. Jae Millz is signed to the popular Young Money label. A-Mafia has been pushing his product successfully on the independent route, and 40 Cal as well as JR Writer both released projects recently.

Ironically, the CD starts off with a Brooklyn emcee, Uncle Murda who has put together one of the toughest NYC posse cuts in a minute. 'Warning' (RMX) features Killa Cam, Jim Jones and Vado as well as French Montana, Jadakiss & Styles P, who all do damage to this track. Other standouts include the JR Writer and Cassidy collabo 'Rewind Back' and then there's the 'From The Bottom' (RMX) with Cam, Hell Rell & Grafh on the hook. The Vado solo 'Let it Burn' is ridiculous and producer Jungle Beats keeps his hot streak going with 'I'll be Back' featuring Jim Jones, Fred the Godson and the Philly favorite right now, Meek Mill. Harlem Heist 3 has plenty of hardbody street joints heavy with freestyles as well as original tracks and some exclusives. There is a lot of flavor on this release and the track sequence moves well to keep the vibe going without skipping through. If you missed out on the individual projects that dropped out Harlem in the past few months, this is like a best of collection of all those joints.

Mixtape Artist Roundup - August 2011

Author: D.Bail

One of the hardest working emcees in the game today, New Orleans own Curren$y has made his presence felt on the mixtape market flooding the Hip Hop world with quality release after release. His newest offering Verde Terrace features none other than previous Justo Award Winner for "Best Mixtape DJ" DJ Drama and is the Mixtape Artist Roundup feature for August. One of the most important factors for success in Hip Hop is creating your own movement and Curren$y who flies his Jet Life movement flag high, has picked up a legion of supporters who have followed him since he was the first artist signed to Lil Wayne's Young Money Records. When he decided to leave the label, critics questioned his decision and wondered if he had made a mistake in removing himself from what would soon become one of the most successful labels currently in the business. But he moved on strong, created his own buzz and following and in this year alone has dropped 3 stellar projects which included Covert Coup, produced entirely by super producer The Alchemist, Weekend at Burnie's, and Return to the Winners Circle.

Spitta's draw is that he has his unique style and flow and Verde Terrace is a mix of a few original joints and some previously used production over which Curren$y truly sounds comfortable. While most remixes rappers do over other instrumentals somewhat mimick the original, Curren$y completely changes the whole vibe and way the OG song was done and makes it his own. Its dope to actually hear a emcee from a different region get on beats like the Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel classic 'It's On' and get busy on it. It was equally refreshing to hear Curren$y on a Max B instrumental, a salute to Biggavel called 'One for the Wave'. He pulls these tracks off with ease, and DJ Drama keeps it low key keeping his presence felt throughout with the drops in the right spots making it an easy listen in the ride or ipod. Overall, the sequence of the songs flow well, and the replay value is definitely there.

Spitta may be a newer face on the scene to some casual fans, but in reality, Curren$y has been putting in work on the mic even before Young Money, with the other New Orleans crew the Miller brothers group 504, courtesy of No Limit Records. His time in the game, his gradual improvement on song making and performing makes him a young veteran. But that fits his style and Verde Terrace is definitely authentic to who he is and where he's from. Spitta goes from topics ranging to keeping it trill with the females, relaxing and chillen, rules and lessons from the street, and just everyday living like he does. He keeps the features to a minimal, and pretty much holds down the set for dolo, which is respectable in the age of an over abundance of features on LP's as well as mixtapes. Willie the Kid drops in with a sick 16 on 'Sky Dive' one of the standouts on Verde Terrace. This mixtape is smooth, and although Curre$eny is known for his laid back flow, he seems to really put some extra punch on his bars on the 14 track set. On 'Ways to Kill Em' he spits:
I'm from New Orleans I stunt/in a blue moon once/every now and then but I don't be doing too much/that's how fools get touched/riding thru all thru all them cuts/thinking you looking cool/dude you looking like lunch/to the wild and the young seem to be born with guns/You need to read the signs if you going where they from/ - Curren$y 'Ways to Kill Em'

Insightful lyrics aside, Curren$y has used the mixtape circuit to his full advantage utilizing the freedom to drop quality music to his fanbase on a consistent basis. Just earlier this year Warner Brothers agreed to a label deal with his Jet Life imprint, showing the industry that once again the power of the mixtape. Justo lives on...

Other notable releases include: (No Particular Order)

Coke BoysCoke Boys 2
French Montana is back once again with Chinx Drugz, Flip & Cheeze collectively known as the Coke Boys on this highly anticipated sequel to to the first standout. Over the course of the last few mixtapes, the group has put together a cohesive versatility on a variety of diverse production. Overall a definite strong offering for the streets, this one is going to flow into the Fall season well. With their fanbase growing by the minute, they continue to tour proving you don't necessarily need a huge label push to build momentum on the road. Strong features from Waka Flocka, Uncle Murda and Tity Boi round out another dope effort by the Coke Boys.
Reppin': All Over Standout Song: Home Town
HOSTED BY EVIL EMPIRE

Wale - The Eleven One Eleven Theory
Wale has caught the attention of those that were sleeping on his talent on one of the better albums of this year, Self Made Vol. 1 The plan to showcase themselves or reintroduce themselves to a eager listening audience has definitely paid off in terms of seeing Wale shine at his best. This mixtape has a a joint for everyone and there is some interesting content addressing the ladies on a number of songs. Wale's is building anticipation for his sophomore album to be released on Maybach Music and this is a cool prelude of what to expect on his LP.

Conscious yet confidant, Big K.R.I.T , a wordsmith with the bars and a excellent producer behind the boards, is back with a new stellar project. The man from Mississippi continues to impress with introspective themes and soul stringing musical backdrops. Special features from Dom Kennedy, Wiz Khalifa, Chris Brown, Smoke DZA, Cyhi The Prynce, Bobby Creekwater and Yelawolf add some different flavor without taking away from the main artist. The music is just refreshing and is departure musically from the ordinary thats out there. That's a great thing and Def Jam signee K.R.I.T looks to continue his commitment to making timeless music on his forthcoming debut soon.
Reppin': Meridian, Mississippi Standout Song: 4 Tha 1's
HOSTED BY DJ BREAKEM OFF & DJ WALLY SPARKS

Meek Mill - Dreamchasers

With two smash hits that have been heating up the streets since the start of June 'Tupac Back' and 'I'm A Boss', the Philly All Star has created a frenzy and a big demand for more music and he delivers with the DJ Drama hosted Dreamchasers. The hunger is there, the production is on point and the excellent feature from Philly OG Beanie Sigel on the title cut 'Dreamchasers' is a true banger. Meek Mill is showing his ability to be a great song maker and joints like 'Middle of the Summer', 'Work' featuring Rick Ross and 'House Party' featuring Young Chris should continue the hit making streak for Mill.
Reppin:' Philly, PA Standout Song: Dreamchasers
HOSTED BY DJ DRAMA

A-Mafia - My Side Of The Story
Deep In The Game Ent. presents A-Mafia back to tell his side of the story. Mafia has been keeping a consistent pace putting out dope music this past year. Slaine & Statik Selektah - State of Grace

Check out the ill story telling skills on 'Trail Of Blood', Slaine brings the ugly realities to life and does it with no holds barred.
Reppin': Boston, Massachusetts Standout Song: The American Way

A.P (About Paper) - Somethin Lite
A.P has been putting in work for D-Block for some time now and this mixtape showcases some of his lyrical abilty. A.P does an excellent job of eating up some popular instrumentals with nothing less than tough bars and he doesn't need the whole D-Block army to do so. He holds his own on this project and is pushing towards the next level in terms of being recognized as one to watch for in the next few months. Co-signed by DJ Big Mike & DJ OP, A.P has what it takes lyrically to demand a listening audience. Check out his freeestyle over the Lloyd Banks joint 'Start It Up'.
Reppin': Yonkers, NY Standout Song: Welcome
HOSTED BY DJ BIG MIKE, DJ OP, POOBS

Jae Millz - The Flood Category 5
From his early days of battling on Smack DVD , paying his dues through a few early record deals and now currently signed to Young Money Records, Jae Millz has been one of the most persistant out. This is part 5 of his buzzing The Flood series featuring DJ Ill Will & DJ Rockstar. Millz is a cat who has really put in work over time and he gets alot of unfair critcism. Jae Millz has been heating up the block for years now and hopefully he will have the opportunity to release his Young Money debut soon. Check for 'KKKrazy' featuring the Birdman on the ad-libs and just raw aggresive lyrics from Millz. Don't sleep on this drop!

Mixtape DJ Roundup - July 2011

Author: D.Bail

July's Mixtape DJ Roundup feature comes courtesy of none other than DJ Whiteowl. Whiteowl is known for being the most consistent when it comes to dropping exclusives. He will drop at least 3 to 4 mixtapes monthly and have a diverse mix of joints on each tape to make it a skip free playlist on his star studded tracklistings. State Property - The Return of State Property, is a mix of some of SP's front line soliders still putting in work musically. Although the members are all working on their solo projects with different labels, they still rep the Philly State Prop umbrella, where each member cultivated their skills over the years starting with their Roc-A Fella days until now. The supergroup consisted of founder Beanie Sigel, Young Gunz (Chris & Neef), Freeway, Oschino, Peedi Crakk and Omillio Sparks. Beanie Sigel, who most recently has dropped a new single 'B-Boy Stance' is still a top-tier lyricist who is currently a free agent. Young Chris is working on his Univeral Motown/Division 1 debut and has been active on the mixtape front. Freeway released a few projects within the past few years, most notably the Statik-Free EP with DJ Statik Selektah, which was recorded in 24 hours. Peedi, currently signed to Amalgam Digital, has been spotted with former Terror Squad members Cuban Linx and Tony Sunshine and the trio was said to be creating new music. Neef is back in the studio getting on his solo grind. The rest of the team occasionally pops up with a freestyle or two on a mixtape to let the fans know there is nothing lost and the skill is still intact.

Overall, State Property was and still is an ill collective of emcees that repped Philadelphia to the fullest. Whether or not the brothers decide to get back together for a full length album they are still making moves and when they do drop material it usually has listening audience. This collective of songs are cuts the SP members have been featured on, as well as exclusive radio freestyles with old and new street bangers. Jay-Z, Wale and Gillie also have some bars in the mix. State Property as a whole definitely has the potential to make another run and with this mix you will be reminded of the chemistry and talent they had when they entered the game. Strong joints include the posse cut 'The Best Flow', the Raekwon & Sigel collab 'Have Mercy' and the exclusive Jay-Z 'Philly Freestyle'. Shouts to Whiteowl for his relentless drive and this standout release. Philly stand up!

Mixtape Artist Roundup - July 2011

Author: D.Bail

This the last album/Time to wrap it up/I ain't a Deejay/But sh*t I had Enuff/90's was rough/Still the best era/I'm getting out before these rappers start wearing mascara/Too late the true greats stand the test of time/I never sacrificed my principles for a dime/ - E.D.I. Mean
'Back Again'

Those opening words to 'Back Again', a new track on The Outlawz Killumnati 2K11 Mixtape set the tone for this months Mixtape Artist Roundup feature. Truer words never seemed realer and this amongst other tracks featured on this mixtape are a standout on what was a great month in stellar Hip Hop releases. Killumanti 2K11 is hosted by two the top DJ's respectfully in their region. The Justos Mixtape Awards is no stranger to Harlem, NY native the legendary DJ Kay Slay, who has racked up 23 Justo awards to date. In addition to dropping the hottest exclusives on the streets for years, he is also CEO of Streetsweepers Entertainment as well as Straight Stuntin' Magazine. DJ Smallz whose acclaimed 'Southern Smoke' mixtapes have made their way across the map is also doing his thing with his own show on Sirius Satellite Radio. Smallz also has a production company, Fear Factor Music Group. With these two powerhouse Deejays linking up to promote this project, great expectations have and were fulfilled by The Outlawz.

The New Jersey natives were discovered and put together by the legendary Tupac Shakur. Over the years they have constantly kept the legacy of 2Pac alive. This mixtape is a prelude to The Outlawz final album, 'Perfect Timing' slated to drop on the 15th anniversary of 2Pacs death, Sept 13th 2011. The Outlawz have seen their shares of ups and down more than most groups in Hip Hop. It's their resilience and work ethnic that has allowed them to continue making music as a unit and tour across the world. The group now consists of E.D.I. Mean, Young Noble and Fatal Hussien. The one thing The Outlawz learned from 2Pac was the art of song making. Joints that have feeling and soul are key to making the connections to the listeners. On 'Blow My Mind' , featuring Young Buck & Trae Tha Truth the topic of loyalty and the how the stigma of getting money could change people around you is addressed well. The Outlawz keep the guest appearances to a minimal and really do an excellent job crafting each track with their own stamp. They are making music that is relevant for our current time frame, reflecting the struggles that people are going through everyday right now. While other music in Rap creates an escape from reality, The Outlawz music is more of a view of real life and their own personal stories which reflect society on the other side. Everybody is not balling and throwing money in the air. It's not a criticism as much, but more of an observation of what's really going on. 2Pac made songs like this countless times in his career, and his proteges have done an excellent job retaining the messages to those that need hope and inspiration.

One of the songs that illustrates this well is 'Keep On'.
Nobody ever planned to fail/But we barely make plans so we land in jail/Gotta explore other options/Gotta get our minds out these boxes/Patience is all apart of the process/Hoping these lyrics stick to ya conscience/Reach them young n*ggas from the 'burbs to the projects/ Young Noble - 'Keep On'

Growth and development is an important part of any artist career and The Outlawz have shown that musically as well as professionally. They recently did a song with Notorious B.I.G. protege Lil' Cease titled 'Bury The Hatchet'. On the track, the artists explore what happened in the past and what should happen moving forward. Cease dedicates the song to the slain rappers' mothers, Afeni Shakur and Voletta Wallace. It is fitting that they are in form to cease on the old beefs and misunderstandings and continue teaching a generation of youth that violence is only setting our communities back. These kids that look up to and idolize the entertainers they see and hear need to see two sides of all situations. The balance that once was established in Hip Hop music has changed drastically. Back in the day, for every party song or shoot em up track, there were tracks about politics, non violence, self respect, history and unity. This mixtape mixes all of those forgotten elements well. The jewels in songs like 'From The Bottom to The Top' , and 'Da Corna' are heartfelt as the lyrics are raw and undiluted. As the popular song by Rick Ross and Meek Millz '2Pac Back' adds to the hundreds of artists that have paid tribute to the fallen star, The Outlawz prove that Pac's message will always push on through them and they do an outstanding job of being that lost voice in Hip Hop that we all still need to hear.

Other notable releases include: (No Particular Order)

Lil WayneSorry 4 The Wait
Young Money CEO Weezy drops something for the fans patiently waiting for his highly anticipated album C4. He blacks out on a variety of popular beats that range from Pop, Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep' , R&B, Beyonce's 'Run The World' to harder tracks like the Lex Luger produced 'Grove St. Party'. He shows no rust at all and rumors are he finished this mixtape in about a days time. Wayne sounds like he has having fun in the booth and really lets loose with his signature style jacking for beats like only he could. Wayne is arguably the hottest artist out right now on the mainstream front, but real listeners know his incredible run was orchestrated through the mixtape circuit. Until the album this is great appetizer.

Alley Boy - Definition of F*ck Sh*t 2
Alley Boy and his Duct Tape crew are creating a lot of controversy in the A right now. At the end of the day though Hip Hop is about the music and Alley doesn't disappoint with this new release. By building his following in the streets with limited radio play, the Duct Tape movement is going strong right now in the South. Hard hitting beats and rhymes with a heavy dose of trap reality is reminiscent to what Young Jeezy did earlier in his career with mixtape classics like 'Streets is Watching'. Street cred is important still in Hip Hop and Alley Boy seems to be the new wave of that in Atlanta. This mixtape will definitely shake the block for the remainder of the summer. With his signing to Atlantic Records/Asylum, Alley Boy should be readying his major label debut soon.
Reppin': Atlanta, GA Standout Song: For Certain

His independent movement has been in effect for years and without an album in the streets he has flooded the market with quality trap music. Live in The Kitchen, Gotti's newest album is on the way but this mixtape series alone has been worth the wait. Fresh of one of the hottest albums of the year with Self Made Vol. 1 The Maybach Music artist Pill is following up with Diagnosis keeping the momentum going. With his earlier releases like - 4180: The Prescription , 4075: The Refill , and 1140: The Overdose giving him a certified buzz, he was able to get his deal with Rick Ross. Mixtapes are still a relevant force to gather the attention that an artist needs to take their skillset to a new level. Pill, who is also a member of the 2010 XXL Freshmen list is a great example of that. Busta Rhymes has had a legendary career in the entertainment field thus far. From films, to live shows and a catalog of music that spans over 20 years, he is still holding his ground in Hip Hop today. In a world of declining music sales, fickle fans, the old industry models completely changing and the slew of new artists and trends, that is an incredible feat. He has hardly slowed down since he started, and has always been in demand musically with his unduplicated signature style. Mixtape Artist Roundup - June 2011

Author: D.Bail

From his earlier co-signs from Justo award winning DJ's such as Green Lantern, Big Mike & Clinton Sparks, Queens NY native Grafh has always been a familiar name synonymous with ill bars and lengthy freestyles crushing industry beats. Unfortunately, due to the industry shuffles and after distribution deals with Sony, Rocafella Records, and E1 Music (formerly Koch). Grafh was unable to release an official debut release. His street album 'Autografh' however, was met with excellent reviews and kept Grafh's presence in the game going for the past few years. In 2011 after a lengthy relationship with Blackhand Records, the two parted professional ways and as of now, Grafh is a free agent. He has been up to task musicially and with the release of this months feature Pain Killers, Grafh resets the bar for himself and has created a buzz that will allow him to chart his own path in terms of his career. Pain Killers is co-signed and hosted by another Queens native, Brick Squad DJ Love Dinero (also a 2 time Justos nominee). From the opening track 'Another One', Grafh puts it in perspective:
Google my name and a check came up/My mind free but my neck chained up - blinging/but I represent a sole purpose/I'ma boss but I represent the co-workers/Ain't no purpose in working for leftovers that are left over cold burgers/You get no service for ya stale *ss fries/With my chain full of frozen rain/And you ain't seen drops of hail that size/
Grafh's effortless flow on a diverse mix of tracks is one of the highlights of this release. He has always had his own unique delivery and the ability to drop verses that will have the listeners rewinding a track is still there. Industry beats like '6'7' and 'So Appalled' are jacked and redone with crazy punchlines and no hooks. Grafh also mixes it up with official club bangers like 'Line Em Up' featuring Waka Flocka and the cocky anthem 'I Don't Know How to Act'. The ability to go from tracks like those, to the introspective track 'Black Roses' is a testament to great song writing and the willingness to be a true well rounded artist. Fans are created from people being able to identify with the music, and Grafh hits home with lines like:
I was tired of being round rappers feeling uncomfy/They ball while I struggle with bills that come monthly/
There are many emcees who flourished on the mixtape circuit in the early to mid 2000's that are not on the scene anymore. Grafh has managed to reinvent himself each time out and with constant mixtape releases, a good presence online and a steady stream of shows, as he begins a new era with his profession. Having the ability to craft potential radio hits as well as deliver a lyrical performance for those underground fans is a strength shown greatly throughout this mixtape. Grafh's music output since he has started his own company Team Bang LLC is impressive as well. In the same month of June, Grafh also teamed up with Kingston, Jamaica native Shalone for the Saturday Night EP. He also drops exclusive frestyles on his regularly updated blog Grafhonline.com. As the Internet age has increased the volume of music in general that floods the web today, it is important that regardless of label situations or radio play, talented artists and DJ's get their recognition and respect. Both DJ Love Dinero & Grafh are perfect examples of those that have grinded out for years and are well deserving of acclaim. Grafh has an EP titled 'The Rule' dropping on July 25th.

The Justos "Mixshow 360" DJ Feature - DeeJay Ran

DeeJay Ran also known as "Jersey's Fastest Hands" has been into the art of Deejaying since the age of 10. The multi talented Ran who was raised in Irvington, NJ has displayed his talents all across the country while building unprecedented media strategies to promote his services. As the former Marketing Director for clothing store franchise Against All Odds, DeeJay Ran toured the states and increased his impact and knowledge of rocking diverse crowds while they shopped in stores. Those appearances were featured on the Comcast/Mike Sisti produced 'Where Ya At?' video show where Ran was also a Co-Host. Ran keeps it true to the culture and represents an area where the DJ is a champion for the music. In addition to working major celebrity events and parties, DeeJay Ran also promotes the singing vocal talent of his brother Shane, who recently won the Steve Harvey Foundation/Choice Hotels 'Rising Star Challenge'. He developed both his own and Shane's websites, DJRansWorld.com & ShanesGoldenVoice.com and has developed a craft for unique promotional ideas that enhances his profession. Mixshow 360 Host D.Bail had a chance to speak with Ran in detail about the impact of winning a Justo award, the differences in music in between regions, push-button DJ's and more.

D.BAIL: Talk about the significance of The Mixtape Awards and the impact of winning a coveted Justo could have on a DJ?

DEEJAY RAN: Winning a Justo mixtape award would have a very big impact on a DJ. Justo was the very first person who gave that proper respect to the DJ and came up with the awards show. I think that any DJ that wins a Justo award would definitely get more exposure, more notoriety and the DJ would probably get more paying gigs because he won that Justos award.

D.BAIL: How do you feel about the new era of push button DJ's? Should the original artform be stuck to and learned or is it a just a matter of palying good music on set?

DEEJAY RAN: At first I didn't have any respect for a push button DJ. But now that technology is evolving so much, it makes it a lot easier. I'm not a push button DJ, however I still use that technology to bring 20 to 30,000 songs rather than carrying a 100 crates of records. The push button DJ and technology as a whole I would say is a gift and a curse. Because it makes it easier, but it also makes it easier for someone who didn't put the work in. For example, somebody like me, I been deejaying since I was 10 years old. I'm 34 now so I've learned. Like before I had my first set of turntables, I used to listen to the radio and I had one Belt-Drive turntable without the pitch control and I had a cassette deck. I used to record the radio and then try to mix from my record to the radio. That's what I used in order to help me learn how to DJ before I was able to get enough money to get a full DJ setup. Back in the day, I used to listen to Red Alert and Chuck Chillout when they were on 98.7 (Kiss Fm) which used to be like Hot 97. Hot 97 used to play Freestyle music and stuff like that back in the day. It was no Hip Hop, no R&B it was just straight Freestyle back then.

D.BAIL: Aww man, yup. I remember that vaguely man.

DEEJAY RAN: With the push button DJ's I would say it would depend on the DJ and how much creativity that he uses with it. I seen a lot of push button DJ's where they was able to sample or bring a song back and still keep it on point.

D.BAIL: How do you as a DJ cater to so many different crowds? How do you stay up on the music in all genres?

DEEJAY RAN: The way I cater to different crowds is I love all types of music. I learned to love all types of music. Rather than just Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae and Club. Now I been getting into Pop & Mainstream. I'm American and Puerto Rican but sometimes I would have to deejay a Haitian party where I would have to bring Suk music or Zouk or Komba. So I had to learn their culture or what they liked to listen to. Then as far as Hispanics, I had to learn the Reggatone, Salsa & Merengue and Bochata. The reason I try to broaden myself out is because where I'm from in Essex County, the average DJ is just doing the clubs in Essex County. They're playing the same songs, the same set, the same order with the same people coming to the same party every single week. Me, I always try to do something to be remembered. I just started thinking out of the box. If I know they're going to be playing Hip Hop, R&B, Club and classic Club all night long, let me try to go out of the box and play a little Pop. Like sometimes, in a club like that you can't even play different genres so you can't even go out of the box because they're so accustomed to the same format or the same type of DJ. So when I use my versatility it's usually when I'm out of state or when I am doing a party with some White folks or some Spanish folks. They like a variety of everything. I have to do a wedding for a Korean couple coming up, so I had to learn how to play their music and the American music at the same time. I have a lot of experience being versatile just from deejaying for Against All Odds for so long. They were sending me to different states, so before I went to that state I had to look at what was the hottest radio station, see what was the hottest songs so I know what type of music they like. So I had to do my homework on every state. That helped me broaden my horizons and be more versatile because when I go out of state and they will book me for a gig, I had what they wanted. Right here in Jersey, you can get away with playing classic Club and House music. You mess around in Miami with that or Atlanta they gonna look at you like you crazy.

D.BAIL: (laughs) Word. That's interesting how different regions view whats hot and what's not. How important is it for a DJ to be involved with all aspects of business?

DEEJAY RAN: Every DJ can't handle business. Not even just DJ's just a business man or woman has to separate corporate from street. It's alot of people that think that "All right, I'm from the hood and I can just get it poppin' by freestylin' it," instead of having a plan and having a proposal to bring to different corporations if thats the angle or way they want to move. My way of networking myself is through flyers, business cards and promo Cd's. I'm always making a CD that's promoting my website or I'm making a CD promoting a promoters party or birthday party. I do a side service where I make customized Cd's for people. I found out when I was with Against All Odds, every week I would make 2 Cd's that's promoting their sales or an upcoming event, things like that. So once I left the company I said, let me utilize that in the night clubs. So what I would do is, if a promoter pays me to that promo CD, I keep promoting that promoters name and company, I let the audience know about the club, whatever drink specials or whatever specials they have, whether you can get in the club a certain time for free, or ladies free, stuff like that. I also been into video mixing while I'm deejaying. I'll play a regular video but then get my own video promoting myself or promoting that I have Cd's on sale, or for the next 5 minutes shots of Hennesy is 3 dollars at the bar, you know different marketing schemes. People gonna look at the screen all night anyway, so why not promote yourself?

D.BAIL: True. That's whats up.

DEEJAY RAN: They will watch me deejay, but while they're dancing they're looking at the video. Then as I'm playing a song where I don't have a video, it will have words saying 'DeeJayRan - Jersey's Fastest hands', or ' Log on to Deejayransworld.com' or 'If you liking the music come come see me at the booth, I got Cd's, 1 for 5 dollars, 5 for 20 dollars.' So then when they see it, I don't even have to say it on the mic, cause they done read it already. So they will come up to me and say "You got this type of CD?" That's how I get my side grustle on.

D.BAIL: I hear that. What are some of the other differences in clubs around the states and the people you've noticed during your travels?

DEEJAY RAN:
Well, let me start with Jersey. I've been here all my life. I've seen the clubs and the music change. I feel the 90's was the best era. Now a days, a lot of music is watered down and they talk about nonsense. Back in the day people was doing music with a meaning. You really had to have skills in order to get a deal. If you wasn't really good you wasn't getting a deal no matter who you knew. Now a days with all the politics and money, money talks now. It's not a matter of if your good or not, it matters who you know and how much money you got. As far as out of state, I like to go to other places rather than this Tri-State area. Don't get me wrong, you got good people in it, but you also have people that feel threatened if they see you moving faster than they're moving. It's more hate than love up here now a days. There's no more unity. As far as the music, music is starting to be almost everywhere. Like a lot of Pop and Mainstream, you hear the same songs everywhere now.
Back in the day if you went to the South, all you would hear on the radio was Dirty South. But I went to Atlanta 2 weeks ago and they was playing R&B, they was doing blends, they had old school. They still did the Dirty South, but it was more of a variety now, because more of a variety of people are moving down there.

D.BAIL: Definitely, there is a big East Coast migration headed to the South. Especially Jersey cats a lot of people from around my way in Plainfield moved down there.

DEEJAY RAN: Yea man, Monica's DJ (DJ Siza) is from Plainfield. And he came down and got it poppin' in a matter of 2 years. My man Face, he's from Jersey he moved down there and he got a film and video production crew and a magazine down there. So when I was there the last time, he introduced me to all types of folks, DJ Drama, DJ Don Cannon, Issac Hayes son (Ike Dirty) and this was just a matter of 3 to 4 days. Like I made more connections down there in 3 to 4 days then I did in about a year or 2 here. It's more of a love and respect for the craft. Like up here in Jersey, no one's respecting the craft anymore. Now a days, the promoter wants me to be the DJ and the promoter, but they want to pay me to be a DJ. And then if it's a slow night, they will look at me like, "What happened?" My job is to make them dance, my job ain't to get them here.

D.BAIL: That's crazy!

DEEJAY RAN: That's messing up the game over here a lot. The promoters here will throw a party, but there's no decorations, no thank you for coming to my party, no giving back to the community. It's no love, it's just "Alright, I am having a party they have to pay to get in and that's it." I just hope that the unity changes. If not, I will make moves.
