Mixtape DJ Roundup - September 2011

Author: D.Bail

Nas - Top 5 Dead or Alive? Or simply the best? Whatever your opinion may be, the fact is Nasir Jones has solidified himself as one of Rap music upper echelon emcees who has persevered strong through the past few decades. He has created classic albums to his name that are forever etched in Hip Hop history. This months Mixtape Roundup comes from DJ Rhude who has done a superb job in bringing some of Esco's lost gems to life with The Found Tape.
There is dope material on this release without a doubt. A Dame Grease produced cut 'Your Mouth Got You In It' tells the vivid story of friends that have crossed the line.
"2 of these dudes got in some murder sh*t just last year/I stopped f*cking with them they could make me lose my career/We still in touch though its just dough I make em some songs/the stench of death on they dirty money just feel wrong/But I don't knock it cause we came from the same upbringing/I came up slingin' the same way they came up slingin/One thing I learned though still judge n*ggas by it/Says alot about men who pretend but can't be quiet/ - Nas 'Your Mouth Got You In It'

Nas has always been one of the better story tellers in Hip Hop and his narration on the mic makes the listener feel like he's right there in the midst of it all. It is refreshing to hear articulate rhymes on a variety of beats. 'The Foulness' freestyle which was once only available on a classic DJ Clue tape is included here as well. The only rap features come from long long time collaborator AZ and Hip Hop legend Kool G Rap on 'The Essence (RMX)' & 'Streets Disciple (RMX)' respectively. Once gain this tape brings you back to the days where an emcee could hold his own with a limit on features. There are many gems to be found on this release and although most hardcore Nas fans may have heard a few joints featured on this tape, there are definitely some unreleased bangers here.

DJ Rhude has put together an excellent tracklist all in CD quality. Some of these tracks may be at least a decade old but the replay value is amazing. Nas is candid about his life and the ups and downs that have come with it on songs like 'My Worst Enemy' & 'The Rise & Fall'. He has always been the type of emcee that a listener has to hear more than once to catch all the jewels being dropped. With a new Nas album on the way possibly this year, this mixtape will no doubt bring an anticipation for the Streets Disciple to make his long awaited return. Hip Hop is alive and kicking!
